Etchings
This series of photos represents etched ivory scrimshaw and pen & ink drawings that Doug did in the 1970's and 1980's. After completing each scrimshaw Nantucket basket top, he made a print of the piece. He has saved these prints untouched for the past several years. Recently the artist decided he wanted to do something with them. Starting by scanning them into his computer at a very high resolution, he was then able to super-enlarge them, and remove any mistakes and accidental lines that were left due to the limited control of the original process. He then made additions and revisions guided by eyes that have several years more experience. This process was very pleasurable for Doug as he has revisited an art form that he had enjoyed with new tools and new eyes. He now has a renewed desire to produce graphic art.

Doug gave up the medium of scrimshaw after working in it for about 10 years because his environmental and political beliefs could no longer condone the use of ivory. He has, however, missed the art form.
